A successful case study starring our Uni.Co machine - the revolutionary cutting system for solid fibreboard and corrugated cardboard - and SuMisura, a Veneto-based company that produces cardboard boxes and partitions, specialising in custom and ‘made-to-measure’ solutions.
With the detailed account of how we achieved an efficient, winning solution starting with a specific customer request.
Uni.Co by Solema: the revolution in the converting world
Uni.Co is the universal and modular cutting system that has revolutionised the solid and corrugated paperboard world in recent years; the ideal choice for anyone frequently dealing with Converting, Packaging and Papermaking Technology jobs.
If you are a manufacturer of boxes, pads, partitions, reinforcements, internal protections, slip sheets and other kinds of fillers - whether in solid or corrugated paperboard, single-face or reel-to-reel - Uni.Co is the definitive solution designed specifically for you!
With its 5 available configurations, Uni.Co is the only machine on the market that can grow with your business. With its module system designed to be seamlessly integrated into your production process, Uni.Co combines processing precision, rapid setting and fast format change. All with an investment that can be scaled to your business.
One cutting system, five configurations
Uni.Co is a modular system consisting of different cutting units which can be combined to provide five different configurations, designed to respond to a wide variety of production requirements.
Choose the most suitable configuration for your needs:
🔹 UNI.CO I
Combined longitudinal and transversal cutting:
Ideal for the production of:• Boards for covers • Padded boards • Strips • Protective pads
🔹 UNI.CO G
Like the "I” configuration, with the addition of the unit for circular tools:
It also allows you to create:• Fillers • Scored pads • Creased padded boards
🔹 UNI.CO F
Like the "I” configuration, with the addition of a punching unit
It also allows you to produce:
• Rounded pads • Slotted partition elements • “V-LOCK” partition elements • “EURO-LOCK” partition elements
🔹 UNI.CO S
Configuration including punching unit and circular tools
Suitable for the production of:
• “V-LOCK” partition elements • “EURO-LOCK” partition elements
• “U” partition elements • Concertina-folded strips
🔹 UNI.CO X
Like the “F” configuration, with the addition of the triple processing unit
Ideal for producing:
• Regular slotted boxes • Telescopic boxes • Containers and trays
• Telescopic containers • “EURO-LOCK” partition elements • “U” partition elements • Pads for hardback books• Protective pads
Uni.Co’s modular design means that the cutting line can be extended at any time by adding an extra cutting module, changing from one configuration to another and allowing your company to expand production.
SuMisura, a well-established company in the custom packaging industry
SuMisura, a company headquartered in Susegana (TV), specialised in the production of cardboard boxes and partitions with made-to-measure solutions for any type of product that needs packaging.
Its strong point is its ability to offer a wide range of customised cardboard packaging - both in terms of shape and graphics - with a quick turnaround and fast delivery, meeting every single request even the most complex and challenging, with no die-cutting cost!
SuMisura: made to measure!
Users can enter the details of their request via the user-friendly website and intuitive configurator. SuMisura’s flexibility will then suggest the most suitable, customised solution with a quick turnaround and precise cost quotation.
Another feature of SuMisura is the possibility of ordering the smallest quantities - without minimum order - of boxes and partitions, in the requested sizes and customisations. This is precisely what sets SuMisura apart from other cardboard box producers.
It’s all in the SuMisura name: made-to-measure boxes, packaging and partitions. In small, customised batches!
“To solve the waste problem” was SuMisura’s specific request
SuMisura needed a highly automated, flexible production solution that could solve the waste problem, i.e. the part of excess material produced by cutting the cardboard which often damaged the finished objects, especially bottles and other glass containers.
After the customer voiced this specific request, Solema’s automation specialists immediately identified the Uni.Co F configuration as the perfect solution to fully meet SuMisura’s precise request.
Uni.Co allows the production of top-quality, clean boxes and partitions, totally free from waste, dust and other unwanted elements.
Once the configuration had been defined, we then optimised the process with the goal of delivering a highly automated machine. This was made possible by adding an anthropomorphic arm implemented by SuMisura and U-PAL automatic palletising system, developed specifically to automate the entire Uni.Co line. This approach allowed us to achieve significant savings in terms of time and labour, in addition to a considerable reduction in fixed costs.
Uni.Co passes quality controls and expands your business
Once the machine was completed, tests were conducted on a sample of 1,000 partitions, which were then given to several of SuMisura’s customers for assessment. After stringent quality checks, the samples were deemed compliant with the required standards and entirely free of waste.
The Uni.Co machine’s high performance also allowed SuMisura to develop new product types, thanks to its ability to handle a wide range of formats — including solid board — without the need to purchase new tools. This opened up attractive business opportunities for the future.
The Uni.Co machine was installed at SuMisura’s site at the end of 2023.
SuMisura signed a preventive maintenance contract with Solema to guarantee production continuity and minimise machine downtime caused by unexpected faults. The contract included the periodic visit by a specialised Solema technician tasked with checking the condition of the machine and the wear and tear of the components.
Uni.Co optimises productivity and meets Industry 4.0 requirements
Uni.Co’s technological features make it an advanced example of Industry 4.0 application, that integrates seamlessly with SuMisura’s management software system, optimising productivity and flexibility while minimising set-up times between one production cycle and another.
Uni.Co software, controlled via a sophisticated touchscreen panel, allows the machine to perform a high-precision automatic production cycle, making it possible to process anything from a single cut to simple punching or creasing/scoring with unprecedented results.
